Highlights of the tour
This trip combines the best of what Bhutan offers with a good mix of both cultural and active pursuits! Begin our tour in Thimphu, the only capital in the world without any traffic light. Catch the weekend market, Textile Museum and more before taking a three-hour winding scenic mountain trail to Punakha. Tour the impressive Punakha Dzong, enjoy day hikes in the cultivated valley of Punakha or an excursion to Phobjikha Valley. We then re-cross Dochu La to Paro and explore the beautiful valley of Paro and end our visit in the dramatic Taktshang Monastery, built on a sheer cliff face at a height of 2950m.

Drive to the BBS Tower Viewpoint for a stunning view of the valley before visiting the Takin Preserve to see the national animal of Bhutan- Takin. Head off to the Changlingmithang National Stadium for an archery shoot-out!

Brush shoulders with the everyday Bhutanese at the Centenary Farmers Market and the craft bazaar. Take a tour of the National Institute of Traditional Medicine and Folk Heritage.

Thimphu / Punakha
Day 3
Drive about 3 hours to Punakha.
​
Climb up the mountain road to Dochu La at 3140m. On a clear day, the pass commands a wonderful panorama of the Eastern Himalayas. Descend through varied forest and finally emerging into the cultivated valley of Punakha.
Hike through beautiful rice fields to Chimmi Lhakhang Temple. In the afternoon, visit Punakha Dzong located at the confluence of the Pho Chu (Male River) and Mo Chu (Female River).

Punakha / Gangtey / Punakha
Day 4
Drive about 3.5 hours to Gangtey Goemba. Take a 1.5 hours nature trail from the monastery through the jungle before emerging on the valley floor. Phobjikha Valley is also the last winter grounds of the black-necked cranes that migrate from the Tibetan plateau between mid-October and March.
Note: rainy weather could increase driving time to 4.5 hours one way. Wangdue Town is a closer alternative.

Day 5
Visit a stunning hill-top nunnery, Sangchen Dorji Lhundrup Chholing, dedicated to the bodhisattva of compassion (Avaloketeshvara). Re-cross Dochu La and enjoy a picturesque picnic lunch en route. Arrive in Paro and enjoy your afternoon at leisure.

Day 6
Hike off the beaten path to the 15th century Zurig Lhakhang above Paro Dzong, overlooking the valley.

En route, visit the iconic 17th century Paro Rinpung Dzong and descend to Drukgyel Dzong. Picnic amidst the ruins then head off for a game of archery and dart.

Day 7
Set on a vertical cliff face, the Taktshang Monastery defies all engineering logic. Hike up for a dramatic view or choose to take a pony ride that can be arranged at an additional cost.

Visit Kyichu Lhakang and enjoy a home-cooked dinner in a farmhouse for that authentic Bhutanese experience!
